Do your research, see if the shop has reviews either online or via social media.

Typically the saying holds true that "Good Tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good". Obviously there's always a bit of wiggle room with this, but if they're willing to do a large piece for next to nothing that should raise some concern.

Seeing as you are reading this you likely are looking for a tattoo and have already started to do some research into the hows, whats and whys.

A Shop shouldn't smell.
Well It should smell clean when you walk in there, in addition to being a well-established shop.

Can they get you in tomorrow?
One thing to check is how far ahead they are booked. If you have to wait a while to get in it generally means they have an established clientele and likely do good work.

Hygiene, eating or smoking and mobile phones.
Does your artist check their phone and not wash their hands or change gloves? If your artist smokes they should be degloving washing their hands before leaving the tattoo to take a break, also washing their hands before returning and putting on a fresh set of gloves. The same apply for eatting.

If your artist
If your 1-hour tattoo takes 3 hours because your artist has to "get lunch" or "take a call" You should of been given a price before starting the tattoo unless it's a large tattoo.
